Relieved Shane Lowry targets fast start in final two rounds

A relieved Shane Lowry is refusing to rule himself out of contention after narrowly making the cut at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open.

The 2009 winner found the water with his approach to the par five 18th but somehow managed to get up and down for a par and a round of three over 75.

At two over par he's 10 shots behind the leaders Marc Warren and Danny Willett but firmly believes he can make a charge over the weekend.

“I'm very happy to be around for the weekend. If you look at it, I don't know, I think four-under might be inside the top-10,” said Shane.

“I'm only six shots off that. If I can post something in the mid 60s, maybe I can be up there inside the top-10 before the leaders tee off.

“I just needed to be more patient today and I wasn't. You know, I paid the price. I was lucky enough to hole that putt on the last. Shows great character and I'm pretty happy with that. Hopefully I can go out tomorrow and shoot a decent score.”
Gavin Moynihan, Gary Hurley, Paul Dunne, Kevin Phelan and Paul McGinley all made it through to the weekend.

"It was tough. You've got to battle even harder when you're on the wrong side of the draw, but it's okay," said McGinley.

"It was kind of a motivating factor for me, too, and to make the cut on the wrong side of the draw is the good thing."
