Ulster duo included in Ireland RWC squad

Ulster's Ashleigh Baxter and Claire McLaughlin were named in the Ireland squad yesterday ahead of next month's Women's Rugby World Club which is being hosted by Ireland.

They are joined by Donegal born Larissa Muldoon in the squad which will be captained by fit-again Niamh Briggs will captain the hosts at the tournament being staged in Dublin and Belfast from August 9 to 26.

Briggs missed the Six Nations because of a hamstring injury but is named in a squad that includes 12 players with previous World Cup experience.

Scrum-half Nicole Cronin, who has played for the Ireland sevens team, is the only uncapped player in the squad.

Ireland will face Japan, France and Australia in the goup stages, being held at University College, Dublin, with the event moving North to Queen’s University and Kingspan Stadium for the knockout stages on August 22 and 26.

Ireland coach Tom Tierney said the squad had been developed over the past three years with the World Cup in mind.

“As a result of the programme, many players have had the opportunity to prepare for this moment and play international rugby and show their skills at the highest level,” said Tierney.
