Geoff Metcalfe continues to have Corrie viewers boiling with rage.

The manipulative hospital DJ has been bullying and abusing his wife Yasmeen Nazir for some time now, even paying for escorts while rationing her money, and stopping her from attending her own grandson’s wedding.

In May, the gentle chef finally snapped, smashing a bottle over his head and stabbing him through the neck. However, the villain is now playing the victim and Geoff’s reign of terror looks set to last a while yet.

Metcalfe is the kind of character soap fans love to hate – and over the years, Weatherfield has racked up quite a few of them.

In the latest edition of this clip-based series looking back over six decades on the cobbles, Jason Manford trawls the archives to recall some of the soap’s most notorious baddies.

As well as Geoff’s antics, he looks back on the Corrie career of ‘Tricky Dicky’ Richard Hillman.

Gail Platt’s husband was played by Brian Capron from 2001-03, in which time he claimed mother-in-law Audrey Roberts was going insane and tried to burn her house down to get her money.

Richard’s spate of murders kicked off after he opted to steal a wad of cash as opposed to saving his business partner Duggie, who had fallen through a stair railing, and everything else went from there.

He also attempted to murder Emily Bishop by hitting her over the head with a crowbar but instead killed Maxine Peacock.

When she caught him red-handed he said the infamous line “you should have stayed at the party Maxine…”

After confessing his crimes to Gail, Richard attempted to kill the entire Platt family by driving them into the canal.

And it didn’t end there, in 2018, psychic Rosemary Piper told Gail that Richard has cursed her family from beyond the grave.

We also look back at the crimes of the ultimate woman scorned Maya Sharma, played by Sasha Behar, from 2003. When Dev dumped her she began a campaign of revenge, planning to set fire to each of his shops one by one and holding him and his lover Sunita hostage. She exited the soap after driving into a wall and being hit by a truck – but miraculously survived.

Builder Charlie Stubbs (Bill Ward) arrived in 2003 and instantly embarked on a series of abusive relationships. He was engaged to Rovers landlady Shelley Unwin, and managed to isolate his fiancee from her family and friends, before being murdered by another of his lovers, Tracy Barlow.

Finally, there’s a look at the character of another builder, Pat Phelan, played by Conor McIntyre from 2013-18 and regularly named one of the best soap villains of all time. The career criminal started out by terrorising the Windass family and leading them to financial ruin. He then raped Anna Windass and framed her for GBH which led to her imprisonment.

His crimes escalated further leading him to kill Andy Carver and Luke Britton, and in 2018, he confessed all to wife Eileen who pushed him off a pier in Whithaven.

He returned to unleash more chaos at Rob and Michelle’s wedding before finally meeting his maker when he was stabbed to death by Anna.

Viewers thought that Geoff had met a similar grisly end a few weeks ago, but the former magician somehow survived – for now.

However, as this programme shows, although villains can cause plenty of chaos and misery in soapland, rest assured, they do get their comeuppance – eventually.
