The final ‘Yorkshire Farm’ is so unmissable

Tuesday: Our Yorkshire Farm; (Channel 5, 9pm)

If film producers are looking for a true-life heroine worthy of big screen stardom, they could do worse than tell the story of Amanda Owen.

The fact she looks like a movie star is one thing, but it’s her extraordinary life that has made this ongoing series so unmissable.

Living on a remote farm in the Yorkshire Dales with husband Clive would be reason enough to tune in, but she also keeps the place running and raises their nine kids while still looking like a million quid.

Oh, AND she ensures their four ponies; six dogs; 40 cows and a thousand sheep are all fed, watered and looked after.

Let’s face it, Amanda Owen makes Wonder Woman and Lara Croft look pretty dull by comparison.

It was James Herriot’s books and subsequent TV smash All Creatures Great and Small which led to Amanda falling in love with the idea of being a shepherd.

She left Huddersfield behind and headed for the hills.

Many folks first set eyes on the Owens in Ade Edmondson’s ITV series The Dales back in 2012.

Given the fact their Ravenseat Farm boasted stunning backdrops and the family were TV naturals, there was little wonder they were eventually featured in Ben Fogle’s New Lives in the Wild, and then this series, currently enjoying its third season.

Amanda adores the fact Our Yorkshire Farm isn’t “airbrushed” or “tidied up”.

We get to see the good, the bad and the ugly, which means viewers also see a realistic, rounded picture. And so what if we see pairs of mis-matched socks and Lego under the sofa?

“All I’m bothered about is if the children are happy and the animals are okay,” she told Lorraine Kelly recently.

“That’ll do. I’m no domestic goddess,” she added.

Some celebs might say that as a humble brag in the hope of being politely contradicted, but Amanda is at least a domestic demi-goddess. After all, of her nine kids, only three were born in hospital.

The others either arrived en route, or in the case of her eighth, Amanda just popped herself down by the fire in the middle of the night and let nature take its course.

It wasn’t some “Earth mother” desire for a natural birth, but more out of self-confessed laziness at the thought of having to get in the car and drive to the hospital for a couple of hours, and then come all the way back again.

It’s surely just a matter of time until that film biopic gets a green light. Until that happens, enjoy the latest offering as the awe-inspiring Swaledale-based family tackles life in lockdown, just as lambing season gets into full swing.

Violet and Clemmy help to deliver new additions to the flock, and Sydney heads out onto the moors on a mission to save a vulnerable newborn lamb.

Meanwhile, Amanda seeks to document their daily lives under lockdown with a video diary, enlisting the kids as camera crew – which results in an unusual view of the farm.
