They are the worst female serial killers this country has seen.

Moors murderer Myra Hindley killed five children in cold blood during the 1960s alongside her twisted lover Ian Brady.

Meanwhile, Rose West was found guilty of 10 equally horrific murders between 1971 and 1987 alongside her husband, Fred West – one of the victims was her own daughter.

Although the Moors Murders and the ‘House of Horrors’ killings are among the most publicised crimes in UK history, not many people know the real story of what happened after Hindley and West, the only two women to be given whole life sentences, meaning they’ll never be released, ended up in jail.

On conviction, West, then 41, was sent to the H ‘Hell Wing’ in HMP Durham, which is where the 52-year-old Hindley also resided, alongside many of Britain’s most serious female prisoners, including IRA terrorists, sex offenders and arsonists.

There, the two women found themselves in beds yards away from each other when Hindley was recovering from a broken leg in the prison’s hospital and formed a tight and “macabre” bond.

Their close friendship even reportedly developed into an affair, which eventually cooled off as they went from confidantes to rivals, battling for the position of jail royalty.

In 1995, Hindley emphatically denied any association with West.

“We have ever held hands, prayed together in the chapel or anywhere else, cooked snacks for each other, watched television together in each other’s cells and that I sent her a ‘Good Luck’ card before the start of the trial or at any other time,” she said in a written statement.

“Nor was I ‘fascinated’ by her when she arrived on H-wing. She was on H-wing before I arrived and was just one of 44 inmates.”

Despite this denial, the pair’s unexpected relationship continues to fascinate the public, and Sir Trevor McDonald is shining a fresh light on the pair’s unexpected relationship in this new documentary.

Featuring exclusive interviews with category A prisoners and previously unseen material, the film begins by looking at how the duo behaved when they were first sent to jail, and how they really were, and are, evil to the bone.

Sir Trevor learns how Hindley continued to manipulate people from behind bars, much like the children she abducted.

Former prison governor Veronica Bird recalls how she even managed to persuade a nun-turned-prison guard to help her escape from the facility.

Plus, he hears from reformed Mafia member Marisa Merico and ex-gangster Linda Calvey how West had bouts of anger, and still heavily depended on her children from behind bars.

Hindley made several appeals against her life sentence, claiming she was a reformed woman and no longer a danger to society.

However, she was never released and died in 2002, aged 60, after serving 36 years in prison.

West, now 66, meanwhile, is currently an inmate at HM Prison New Hall, Flockton, West Yorkshire.

She announced her intention not to appeal against her convictions in 2001, while still maintaining her innocence.

Like some of the evil duo’s crimes, perhaps we will never get the full truth about West and Hindley’s relationship.

However, in 2019, West’s former solicitor claimed that his client said: “Yeah, Myra, she’s all right, we get on, I want to see how it goes.”

But that was followed not long after with: “You have to watch Hindley, mind.

“She is very manipulative. She’s flippin’ dangerous, that one.”
