The company, which was formed in 1962, performs shows and concerts at the Riverside Theatre in Coleraine, and it came as a great disappointment that, despite all of their hard work, Shrek could not go ahead as planned. However, the Society are hopeful that eager audiences will be able to see the production next year instead.

Publicity Manager Aine Crawford said: “The closing of theatres has had a huge impact on professional performers, but it has also been detrimental to the Amateur Arts. These societies who rely on their loyal audiences and their committed cast, do it for the love of theatre. Covid-19 has paused this passion.

“At the end of March, Portrush Music Society found themselves, like so many other societies in the Arts, having to take the difficult, heartbreaking decision to postpone their 2020 production of Shrek The Musical. Already, so much time, hard work and effort had been put into this production; from singing, acting and dancing rehearsals, to set construction and organising of costumes. Now, every detail is on hold.

“Behind the scenes, PMS committee were acting quickly to ensure that money would not be lost to the society through this pandemic. As an amateur society, all money comes from fundraising, relying on this and audiences to fill the theatre for every performance. The committee had to also use foresight in preparing for when this production may be viable again, and keeping all departments in the loop.

“The cancelling of rehearsals was not only a clear halt to the progression of Shrek, but it also stopped a much loved form of socialising for many members. PMS members range in age from eight to eighty, so it was important to ensure that communication lines were kept open. This happened in many ways, all through the means of social media.

“There were daily photo challenges, daily riddle tests and weekly games nights, even marking what should have been opening night with a fancy dress zoom call. All of these elements ensured that any feelings of isolation and distance between individuals could be eased in the short term.

“Once restrictions were eased to allow for small gatherings in an outdoor setting, this gave the opportunity for the principal cast of Shrek to carry out a read through rehearsal. In doing so this started the ball rolling again towards a possible opening night, giving our members more hope.

“Whilst the future still remains uncertain for the Arts, Portrush Music Society are endeavouring to do all they can in the process, to ensure their own commitment to regulations and remaining positive for the future of our productions, for our members and our audiences.”
