ABP NI raises £67,000 for local charities

ABP Northern Ireland recently handed over cheques for more than £67,000 to eight local charities, following an active calendar of CSR throughout the last 12 months.

ABP Group, which has two processing plants in Northern Ireland, in Lurgan and Newry, employs almost 500 people in the province and employees across both sites have been engaging in various initiatives to raise funds to benefit local charities.

Liam McCarthy, spokesperson for the ABP Group, explained: “We selected eight charities that are active across our team members’ local communities to support throughout the year. We used a variety of methods to raise money for each and one of the key events in our CSR calendar was a charity Ball in the Canal Court Hotel, in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society in Northern Ireland, which raised a staggering £30,000 for the charity.

Bernadine McCrory, operations director for Alzheimer’s Society in Northern Ireland, commented: “We are very grateful to everyone at ABP in Lurgan and Newry and also to all of the sponsors who donated prizes as well as the guests, who gave so generously on the evening.

“We know the time, energy and resources that went into delivering such a prestigious event and we, at Alzheimer’s Society, are delighted that the services we deliver across the province have been supported and highlighted by this fantastic event.”

Liam continued: “We also hosted an annual barbecue which raised almost £30,000 with £14,330 each presented to Brain Injury Matters, a charity dedicated to supporting people affected by acquired brain injury to rebuild their lives and reach their full potential in the community and Head Injury Support, an active group in Newry, which helps the survivors of brain injury. We also gave £1,000 to MacMillan Cancer, which is active right across Northern Ireland.

“During the year ABP donated our carpark for use during a Co Down GAA match, which raised £1,000 for the Southern Area Hospice and at the Balmoral Show 2015, we raised £600 for Cancer Focus NI, at our corporate stand. Throughout the year we also raised £2,000 for Up for Downs.

“Another charity close to our hearts is S.M.A.R.T. (NI) Ltd, (The Stephen McElroy Appreciation and Remembrance Team) which was set up by Stephen’s family following his untimely death at age eleven last year. Stephen loved sport and all money raised for S.M.A.R.T will go towards building a sports pitch in his memory beside his school, St Mary’s Primary School, Dechomet, Castlewellan.

“We are immensely proud of our team for helping us to raise these significant funds which will support so many people, locally.”
