In the dairy cow ring, the judge was Mr Robert Hunter from Lanarkshire in Scotland, owner of the Letterkenny Holstein and Clydevalley Jersey herds.

He had a difficult job picking out the two qualifiers for the McLarnon Feeds/NISA Dairy Cow Championship from an excellent class of dairy cows.

As his first qualifier, Mr Hunter chose the second calver, Wyndford Sid August 26 VG88 (second calver), from George and Jason Booth, Stewartstown. She last calved in March and is currently yielding 40 litres per day. As a heifer, she finished fourth in her class at the 2015 Royal Welsh Show.

The judge was impressed by her “tremendous top line, strong centre ligament and good locomotion”.

For his second qualifier, Mr Hunter chose Ardmore Miranda 2 EX91 from the Ayrshire herd of John and Michael Hunter, Crumlin. Now a third calver, Miranda achieved 9,000 litres at 4.5% BF and 3.4% Protein in her last lactation. She was reserve champion at the 2014 RUAS Winter Fair and reserve champion at Ballymena Show this year.

The judge said she was “a very stylish dairy cow with open ribs and good dairy character”.
