Committee members hold special meeting

UFU Arable and Horticulture committees held a special meeting recently with Dr John Gilliland OBE Chairman of an expert working group to discuss emerging conclusions from a draft sustainable agriculture land management strategy.

John has led an expert group including local farmers in response to a recommendation in the Agri-Food Strategy Board report which called on government to develop a strategic land management policy.

Allan Chambers, chairman of the UFU Seeds & Cereals Policy Committee, chaired this special UFU meeting giving all the opportunity to discuss and explore some of the emerging brave conclusions from this piece of work.

Going forward improved soil fertility and access to land coupled with sound science to drive out inefficiencies are key to making the Northern Ireland agriculture industry profitable and sustainable.

The UFU arable and horticulture committees look forward to receiving a copy of the finished report at the end of May for their further consideration.
