A County Antrim employment law and HR training firm, which is among an elite 1% of employers to gain a Platinum Investor in People accreditation — a benchmark that recognises the top leaders in employment — has published a book especially for SMEs on how to keep your workforce engaged and highly motivated. Something all businesses are struggling with now in time of crisis and recession.

“Mastering Small Business Employee Engagement – 30 Quick Wins and HR Hacks from an IIP Platinum Employer”, is the essential self-help book for the those running either an SME or a team of people in a larger organisation.

The book, was officially launched yesterday (Tuesday, October 6), is written by Barry Phillips BEM, CEO, and Jayne Gallagher, MD, Legal Island, a workplace compliance company which helps HR professionals understand employment law and how it applies to their workplace.

It navigates a number of topics and includes a specially added chapter on how to keep remote workers engaged – a topic that is puzzling many SME and team leaders at the moment.

The book aims to transform how employers manage their business, for the better, and thanks to the experience and trials and errors of the authors, readers are assured the theories and practices have been tried and tested in a real life working environment.

The practical guide and reference manual also explains the eight essential components of employee engagement, plus their 30 Quick Wins and HR Hacks that culminated in their crowning as ‘Best Place to Work (SME)’ and an Investors in People Platinum award in 2019.

It also comes with case studies and templates making it a must-read for everyone from small business owners to SME leaders, franchise managers and start-ups or those in senior positions tasked with motivating and nurturing teams in 2020.

Managing Director and co-author of the book, Jayne Gallagher, said: “The book not only tells the story of the Legal Island journey and the many things Barry and I learned on our way to being crowned an IIP Platinum employer but also offers lots of tips, templates and policies. It’s a brutally honest account of the many initiatives that worked (and indeed those that didn’t) on our way to building our workforce, that has, over the past two decades produced time and again outstanding events and services.”

Barry Phillips, CEO at Legal Island and co-author, added: “The working environment has completely changed due to Covid-19. Now the remote or hybrid worker is likely to be the most common type of employee and they come with very different challenges for leaders of teams or SMEs.”

Michelle Halloran, HR Consultant, said after reading the book: “I love this book – it’s the only guide you will need to all the ‘soft stuff’ (along with the practical procedures for implementation) that no-one tells you about when you become an employer.”
