Under employed and unemployed to be offered free cloud training in Belfast

TechTalent Academy is taking steps to help bridge the digital skills gap by collaborating with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to launch a new, free online training course in Belfast to help the unemployed or underemployed secure employment in the lucrative cloud computing sector.

AWS re/Start is a 12 week, full time skills development program enabling individuals to jump-start their career working in cloud computing. Through scenario-based learning, labs, and coursework, learners will gain the skills they need for an entry-level cloud role as well as practical employment skills such as communication, time management, collaboration, interviewing and CV writing.

According to Tech Nation there are currently 806 open tech jobs in Northern Ireland, with 64% of those being based in Belfast. As the sector continues to grow it is predicted that this demand will only increase, bringing with it a major challenge on the skills supply side.

Amy Millard a recent graduate said: “The AWS re/Start programme with TechTalent Academy has been life changing. The trainers have successfully guided me through the course; where I not only gained fundamental IT knowledge, skills and an AWS Cloud Practitioner qualification, but also, with their encouragement and mentoring, I was able to get a new job as a Cloud Ops Engineer. I cannot thank TechTalent Academy enough for this amazing opportunity.”

Together TechTalent Academy and AWS are building an exclusive, diverse global pipeline of new cloud talent by engaging unemployed or underemployed people who otherwise might not have had access to this career path.

Janice Rae, CEO and Founder of TechTalent Academy explained: “We are delighted to be launching the AWS re/Start programme in Belfast. The pandemic has had a massive impact on society with many people facing redundancy and financial hardship. Tech is an area of rapid growth and is currently facing a massive skills shortage. Investing in upskilling the local community is critical to allow us to create a talent pipeline for the future, enabling our tech sector to continue to grow.”

AWS re/Start will be taught remotely and is scheduled to begin on May 24. A technology background is not required to apply. Throughout the course, students will acquire cloud computing skills whilst preparing for AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification. Upon graduation, TechTalent Academy will connect individuals with employers, helping learners to transition successfully into working life.
