Dead calf dumped by the roadside

North Down DUP MLA Gordon Dunne has expressed his concern following the discovery of a dead calf in the Countryside in the Craigantlet Hills area of North Down.

Mr Dunne said: “I was shocked that a local resident out walking in a scenic area of North Down in the Craigantlet Hills area came across a dead calf lying on the edge of the road.

“The Friesian calf, which was probably just days old, was dumped on the side of the road in a black plastic bag on a rural road close to the Ballysallagh Reservoir.

“We all appreciate farming is going through a difficult time at present and I know farmers carry out their business in a responsible manner and do not dispose of their dead animals in such an unauthorised manner. Incidents like this are totally uncharacteristic of the local rural community within the Craigantlet and Holywood Hills area.

“I immediately contacted Ards & North Down Borough Council about the dead animal and have asked for urgent action to be taken to remove the carcass.”

He added: “It is important that it is removed immediately before it starts to decompose and becomes a real risk to public health and also to prevent it being consumed by foxes and other wildlife.’
