Dull, wet July; roughly average temperature

The Armagh Observatory has reported that July was nearly 30% wetter than average at Armagh with some 20% less strong sunshine than would normally be expected in July at Armagh. The mean monthly temperature was about average.

Total precipitation was 80.80 mm (3.2 inches) including four trace values, which is 10% more than the long-term (1838-2010) average July precipitation at Armagh and 29% wetter than the most recent (1981-2010) 30-year average. This was the wettest July for four years, that is, July 2012. The wettest day was the 4th, with 8.4 mm (0.33 inches) of rainfall.

The mean monthly temperature was 15.7 degrees Celsius, approximately 0.9 degrees C warmer than the long-term (1795-2010) July average at Armagh, but nearly identical to the most recent (1981-2010) 30-year July average.

The warmest day (highest maximum air temperature) was 27.6 degrees C, which occurred on the 19th. The coolest night (lowest minimum air temperature) was 8.1 C, occurring on both the 13th and 31st July. The warmest night (highest minimum air temperature) was 17.2 C on the 20th. There was no frost.

A double rainbow was seen on the evening of the 7th, and some thunder reported on the afternoon of the 13th before the following cool evening and night.

There was a total of 113.1 hours of strong sunshine. This is approximately 23% less than the long-term (1881-2010) July average at Armagh, and 17.5% less than the most recent (1981-2010) 30-year average for the number of hours of strong sunshine at Armagh. This was the dullest July for four years, that is, since the slightly duller July 2012. The sunniest day was the 19th, with a total of 10.9 hours of strong sunshine.

These data refer to observations at Armagh Observatory, which has been recording the weather at Armagh since 1795.
