FSA takes the food safety and hygiene message to new crop of agriculture students

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) in NI recently ran a competition at Greenmount College to help educate agricultural students on food safety matters

Following a number of guest lectures from a representative from the FSA’s Primary Production Team, students were encouraged to participate in a quiz, with the highest scoring students entered into a draw to win various prizes from shopping vouchers to the top prize of an iPad Air.

The competition comes as part of an ongoing partnership between the FSA and CAFRE Greenmount Campus. The college runs a range of agriculture courses to help teach students about food safety and hygiene from ‘farm to fork’. They are taught about the role of the FSA, specific requirements for primary producers and practical advice on complying with relevant regulations.

Gerard Smyth from the FSA in NI’s Primary Production Team commented on the competition: “It’s important, that these students are educated about food safety and the responsibilities that each and every producer has, as part of the food chain.

“Together with CAFRE, we’re able to offer our advice and expertise to students which they otherwise wouldn’t have access to. We were delighted that Laura Hawkes won our food safety competition and I’m sure she’ll put her new iPad Air to good use.”
