HMRC scam warning revealed - thousands of people have already been duped in phishing scams

Action Fraud - the UK’s national fraud & cyber reporting centre where you can report, get advice and information - say they are aware of emails claiming to be from HMRC offering tax rebates as a result of #coronavirus.

The support agency are advising members of the public: “If you get a call or message claiming to be from HMRC that asks you to click on a link or to give info such as your name, card or bank details, it’s a scam”.

They say unsuspecting members of the public have already lost thousands of pounds in coronavirus-related scams.

A message on their Facebook page says: “We have received 4,241 reports of coronavirus-related phishing emails.

“Criminals continue to exploit the coronavirus pandemic to defraud innocent members of the public. Currently, coronavirus-related frauds make up 3-5% of all fraud reports we receive.

“To keep this number as low as possible, we want people to be aware of the very simple steps they can take to protect themselves from handing over their money, or personal details, to criminals.

“Please continue to visit this page for information on the latest scams we are seeing”.
