Holstein double at Armagh Show

With perfect surroundings, ideal weather conditions and lots of attractions on offer, this year’s show attracted a large crowd of spectators.

The show attracts a large entry of quality pedigree and commercial cattle every year, and this year was no exception.

With plenty of style on display in the dairy ring, the difficult task of selecting the Armagh qualifiers for the 2016 McLarnon Feeds/NISA Dairy Cow Championship went to Miss Izzy Whittaker, owner of the renowned Knowlesmere Holstein Herd from Shropshire, England. Miss Whittaker is well known in international pedigree circles, having judged at the German and Danish National Holstein Shows. She had to call on all her experience to select the top cows in Armagh.

After some consideration, Miss Whittaker chose Kilvergan Duplex Ethel 2 EX94(3) from the Kilvergan Herd of TS Haffey and Sons, Lurgan, as her first qualifier. Coming from a line of five generations of EX cows, Ethel is no stranger to the McLarnon/NISA Dairy Cow Championship, having claimed the title back in 2013. She was also awarded Reserve Champion at the Irish National Holstein Show in that year. The judge was very impressed with Ethel’s “excellent mammary for a fifth calver and tremendous stature”. She last calved in February and is currently averaging 50 litres/day.

For her second qualifier, Miss Whittaker selected Glasson Denzel Flo, recently classified VG89 with her second calf, from Jason Pollock’s Garrick Herd near Portadown. Flo calved at the end of March and is currently producing 48 litres/day. She is projected to reach 11,500 litres for this lactation.

McLarnon Feeds would like to congratulate both of these winning cows and wish them every success at the final of the 2016 McLarnon Feeds/NISA Dairy Cow Championship on Wednesday 27th July at Clogher Valley Show.
