Horse-powered learning helps struggling readers

Struggling readers across Northern Ireland are finding confidence, focus and a love for books thanks to a unique equine-assisted learning programme.

Called Beyond the Book, the learning programme is offered by Hold Your Horses. Run by Lisa Hamilton, a certified Equine-Assisted Learning Facilitator with specialist training in literacy intervention and emotional support, Hold Your Horses is fully accredited and insured—giving families peace of mind and professional care in every session.

The Beyond the Book program is specially designed for children who find reading difficult—whether due to dyslexia, ADHD, anxiety, school refusal, or low self-esteem. Set in a peaceful, outdoor environment, all sessions involve ground-based activities—no riding—so children can connect with the horses in a safe, accessible, and engaging way.

Each session blends movement, sensory-rich tasks, and meaningful interactions with horses to strengthen the five key critical reading skills:

Phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

These are explored through creative, hands-on activities such as grooming, leading exercises, themed obstacle courses, and horse-inspired games—making learning feel natural and fun.

“Many children shut down in a classroom, but they come alive around horses,” said Lisa Hamilton. “By stepping outside the traditional setting, we help them reconnect with learning at their own pace.”

She added: "Let’s help your child go beyond the book—and discover the joy of reading, one hoofbeat at a time."

In addition to literacy, the program also supports emotional regulation, confidence-building, and focus—making it a powerful alternative for children who need a more tailored approach to learning.
