'It has been a pleasure welcoming you': Sad farewell as historic Northren Ireland castle tearoom closes its doors
Customers have shared their shock and sadness at the closure of the much-loved Brownlow Castle Tearooms, praising its welcoming staff, food and historic setting overlooking Lurgan Park
A popular historic tea room in Co Armagh is closing its doors today (Wednesday), prompting an outpouring of sadness from customers who have described the news as “awful” and a “sad day for Lurgan”.

Brownlow Castle Tearooms, set within the original family drawing room at Brownlow House, offered visitors the chance to enjoy coffee, breakfast and afternoon tea in the historic surroundings, with views across Lurgan Park.
In a social media post, the owners announced the permanent closure with “deep regret”, thanking customers for their loyalty and support.
They said: “With deep regret we announce that Brownlow Castle Tearooms will be permanently closing its doors at the end of service on Wednesday, October 21.
“We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all our customers for their support, loyalty and custom. It has been a pleasure welcoming you to Brownlow Castle and we are truly grateful to everyone who has visited us and supported us along the way.
“A special thank you also goes to our dedicated team of staff, whose hard work, commitment and contribution have been invaluable.”

The announcement sparked a wave of emotional tributes, with customers sharing fond memories of the tearoom, praising its welcoming staff and calling for the venue to reopen.
Vivien described the closure as “a sad day for Lurgan and for Brownlow Castle”, adding that it represented “a big step backwards” in the landmark’s involvement in the local community.
“The Tea Rooms were a very special place and, I believe, an integral part in the life of Brownlow Castle and were known for good food and a warm and friendly welcome from the staff,” she said.
“To all of you I would like to say a big thank you for making it such a lovely place to visit. You are all amazing and I wish you every success in finding new employment.”

Gail also paid tribute to the team, recalling visits for breakfast and her own wedding at the venue more than two years ago.
“Sorry to hear this... Loved calling into Brownlow Castle the odd time for their lovely breakfast. The staff were so friendly,” she posted.
“Also had my wedding here over two years ago and the staff were amazing, went above and beyond for our special day and the food was lovely as well... Stunning building!”
Noel said the closure was “awful news” for the staff, adding: “Hopefully someone may see the lovely comments and see this as an opportunity to get it reopened.”
Brownlow House, also known as Brownlow Castle or Lurgan Castle, is a Grade A listed stately home built in 1833 for Charles Brownlow, the first Baron Lurgan. Designed by Scottish architect William Henry Playfair, the Elizabethan Revival building overlooks Lurgan Park and is a popular venue for weddings, conferences and events.
In a second post, the owners confirmed that all previously booked weddings and events would continue to go ahead as planned.
They added: “As we close this chapter, we would like to thank everyone who has been part of the Brownlow Castle Tearooms journey. Your support and contribution have been greatly appreciated.”
