Kraken Fish & Chips in Killyleagh launched its Feed the Fleet scheme last month, promising to provide something for free to a different section of the community on the third Wednesday of each month.

Today (Wednesday, October 21), the shop will open an hour early, from 3pm to 4pm, to give away free fish and chips to everyone aged over 65.

In a social media post, the team behind Kraken — Fionnbharr, Colleen and Shane — said the offer was their way of thanking the older generation for helping to shape the local community.

“No catches, no gimmicks. Just a proper fish supper on us!” they said.

“It's our way of giving a little something back to the older generation who've helped make our community what it is today."

The owners also encouraged customers to spread the word: “Tell your parents, grandparents, neighbours or anyone you know who deserves a wee treat. Not everyone is on Facebook, so we'd really appreciate you helping us get the word out!

“Regular service starts at 4pm as usual. Good food. Good people. One community.”

Last month, the business kicked off the scheme by offering free chicken and chips to every child under the age of 16.

The chippy, which opened in June, said it had been considering how it could give more back to the community following the welcome it had received since opening.

“We just want to say a huge thank you to the people of Killyleagh and beyond for the incredible welcome you've given us,” they added. “Your support means the world.”
