'Opportunities like this don’t come often!': Work begins on 24 luxury apartment development at one of the most prominent sites on the North West 200 circuit

The former Metropole Hotel site — a long-derelict Portrush landmark — begins its transformation as construction starts on the long-awaited One Metropole development

Work has officially begun on the long-awaited redevelopment of one of the most prominent sites on the North West 200 circuit.

Boards and gates were installed this week at the Metropole corner, marking the first visible steps toward transforming what has long been considered an eyesore on the famous race route.

The site at 70–72 Eglinton Street, formerly home to the well-known Metropole Hotel and later a residential home for older people, was granted planning permission earlier this year for a new 24-apartment scheme by developer Enzo Portrush Ltd.

The approved plans include 24 apartments with car parking, landscaping and access from Portstewart Road, along with the demolition of existing outbuildings on the 0.2-hectare plot.

Once a landmark of Portrush’s tourism scene, the Metropole’s redevelopment marks a significant shift for the site as residential interest in the town continues to grow.

The location previously received approval in 2007 for the demolition of the former hotel and the construction of 34 apartments. However, earlier this year Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council notified nearby residents of amended plans and invited feedback.

After reviewing submissions and updated documents, planning officials concluded the revised scheme met policy requirements, and full planning permission was granted on 3 June 2025.

A council spokesperson confirmed: “Full planning application was approved on 3 June 2025 for the erection of 24 apartments, including car parking, landscaping, access from Portstewart Road and all associated site works (including demolition of existing outbuildings) at the former site of the Metropole Hotel, Nos. 70–72 Eglinton Street, Portrush (Application LA01/2022/0739/F).

“The site, located in a prime position within Portrush, had previous planning approval for 34 apartments granted in 2007. The reduction in the number of apartments has improved the relationship of the proposed development to the existing townscape and provides a quality residential scheme that aligns with planning policy.”

Local estate agents Armstrong and Gordon confirmed: “Coming soon to Portrush! Discover 24 luxury apartments at One Metropole, perfectly positioned adjacent to West Strand Beach — where modern living meets breathtaking coastal views. “This exclusive collection offers premium design, unbeatable location, and the ultimate Portrush lifestyle. Whether you’re seeking a holiday escape, investment opportunity or forever home, One Metropole delivers luxury at every level. “Register your interest today and be first to receive updates and plans. Opportunities like this don’t come often — don’t miss out!”

As construction begins, the project signals a fresh chapter for one of Portrush’s most iconic sites, viewed by global audiences each year during the NW200.
