The Satellite Broadband Support Scheme will allow homes and businesses to get a subsidised satellite broadband connection if they are currently unable to obtain a broadband service of at least 2mbps.

The current UK wide rollout of superfast broadband is progressing well but Government was determined to help those with the slowest connections by providing an immediate boost to their available speeds ahead of any future improvements planned.

Enterprise Minister Jonathan Bell said: “I recognise poor broadband is an issue for people and businesses in rural areas and I am pleased to launch this scheme which will help those with the slowest connections by providing an immediate boost to their available speeds.

NI Director, Nigel Smyth, commented said: “CBI members will welcome this initiative as it will enhance business connectivity in remote areas.

“There are increasing numbers of employees working from home, and many live in rural areas.

“Servicing the needs of international customers requires greater flexibility and the ability to work from home with good internet access is a critical requirement in a modern economy.

“This initiative will help develop the rural economy and enable businesses to take advantage of the increasing opportunities available in the digital economy.”
