Producer information event

The Ulster Farmers' Union in partnership with DARD have organised a Producer Organisation Information Meeting which will be held on Tuesday, May 3, at 6.30pm at CAFRE, Greenmount Campus, Antrim.

Ulster Farmers’ Union Deputy President Ivor Ferguson said: “We are delighted to be working along with DARD to deliver a Producer Organisation Information Meeting which will be open to all growers, packers and processors to attend.

“Being part of a Producer Organisation could afford many opportunities for fruit and vegetable growers locally. Producer Organisations operate widely throughout the EU helping grower members to improve their position in the marketplace, reduce production costs, increase viability of individual members and achieve more sustainable supply chains.

“Opportunities afforded by operating as part of a Producer Organisation locally warrants further investigation. This event is open to both UFU members and non members and provides a chance for all involved in the fruit and vegetable sectors locally to find out more about the benefits of co-operation within the structure of a Producer Organisation.

“Producer Organisations aim to deliver support structures, marketing models and business tools to help achieve the best return for all members. Evidence suggests this structure gives a foundation for business growth and drives efficiency along the supply chain. This approach was adopted by the Irish mushroom sector and was very successful in developing the market and strengthening the industry following a period of major challenges and change.

“This special meeting will give attendees a chance to explore how this model could be replicated for fresh fruit and vegetables. It’s particularly important in difficult times for businesses to plan for their future.” added Mr Ferguson.
