PSNI officers to patrol Belfast city centre after shops reopen on Friday to ‘address issues’ around coronavirus

PSNI officers will patrol Belfast city centre to “address any concerns” when shops reopen tomorrow, it has been announced.

City leaders have sought to give assurances to the public ahead of what is expected to be a busy shopping period in the lead-up to Christmas after the coronavirus restricions expire at midnight tonight.

Belfast Chamber of Commerce chief executive Simon Hamilton said: “Our businesses are open. They’re safe and they and their staff need your support.”

Belfast Lord Mayor Alderman Frank McCoubrey said: “This is a crucial period for retailers who have had such a challenging year.”

The managing director of Belfast One, Kathleen McBride, said: “Safety measures have been put in place and investments have been made to keep customers and staff safe.”

She said PSNI City Centre Beat PSNI officers will patrol and “address any issues or concerns” that arise.
