Revised requirements for submitting pig slurry information

As a pig producer exporting slurry, you are aware of the need to record the date and amount of slurry moved off the unit, the nitrogen (N) content of the slurry and the importers name and address.

In addition, as a result of a change to the Nitrates Action Programme in 2015 you will now need to send information on slurry exports to the Northern Ireland Environmental Agency (NIEA). It requires that the details of your 2015 slurry exports should be sent to NIEA by 31 January 2016. In addition to the date, N content, importers name and address and slurry quantity, the importers DARD Business ID is also required.

Further information, a sample record sheet and details of how to submit your records can be found in the ‘Nitrates Action Programme 2015-2018 and Phosphorus Regulations Guidance Booklet’. The nitrogen content of pig slurry has also changed and the new figure for 2015 onwards is 3.6 kg N per cubic metre. The nitrogen production figures are also slightly different and from 2015 the figures to use are as follows:

* Dry/lactating sow/served gilts – 16 kg N per year

* Maiden gilts – 11 kg N per year

* Boars 18 kg N per year
