Ryan Kelly's 16th birthday present

Ryan Kelly from Co Londonderry got a special birthday present from his parents last weekend, and on Monday Brian Megahey from Ballyutoag Training arrived in the yard to put Ryan through a Lantra accredited Tractor driving course.

This came about as Ryan’s parents wanted to ensure that he was properly trained in all aspects of operating the farm’s tractors safely. In fact, the farm’s insurers wanted proof that Ryan had been on a proper training course.

The course covered all areas from legislation, pre-use checks, using the operator’s manual to ensure correct use of controls, basic driving, trailer work and three point linkage equipment. As Ryan was 16, front end loaders and PTO operations were also covered. After assessment and a short multiple choice question paper, Ryan was given his assessment sheet to show how he had done.

Brian gave written feedback outlining areas for improvement. Ryan was delighted to be told that he had passed. A Lantra Certificate will be on its way to the Kelly farm shortly.
