Saintfield High School pupils empowered by Drumbo wind turbine visit

Year 11 agriculture pupils from Saintfield High School powered on with their learning of renewable energy this week with a visit to see wind energy company, Simple Power's wind turbine at work on Henry Doran's farm in Drumbo, County Down.

The Year 11 Saintfield High School agriculture class were recently given an education tour of the wind turbine on Henry Dormans farm by Stuart Clarke and Colin Power from Northern Ireland wind energy company, Simple Power, to learn first-hand about the power of wind turbines and wind energy in action in their local area. The Year 11 Saintfield High School agriculture class were recently given an education tour of the wind turbine on Henry Dormans farm by Stuart Clarke and Colin Power from Northern Ireland wind energy company, Simple Power, to learn first-hand about the power of wind turbines and wind energy in action in their local area. Along with their teacher, Mrs Jackson, nine pupils visited the wind turbine on Henry’s dairy farm. The visit was co-ordinated by Simple Power to allow the class to learn first-hand about the power of wind energy in action on a farm in their local area.

As part of the tour, Saintfield High School pupils were shown the single 250kW wind turbine by Simple Power’s Planning Manager, Stuart Clarke and Project Co-ordinator, Colin Power. The Simple Power team outlined the difference between renewable and non-renewable energy sources and explained how farmers can utilise their land to generate clean energy for homes throughout Northern Ireland.

Ms. Watt, Principal of Saintfield High School commented: “Having a tour of the local wind turbine was a great opportunity for our Year 11 agriculture class to see renewable energy in action on the farm and learn how farmers can diversify their farm business by harvesting the power of wind. With climate change being an important global issue, it is fantastic to be able to show our pupils first-hand how steps are being taken in their local area to reduce our carbon footprint.”
