Social care provider launches recruitment drive following COVID19

Northern Ireland’s largest charity provider of care for adults and children affected by mental ill health, learning disability and dementia, is offering opportunities for newly unemployed workers to take up social care roles, in a bid to bolster its workforce and maintain essential services.

Praxis Care, which employs 1,500 people in Northern Ireland, Ireland, Isle of Man and England, believes that many people who have been working in other sectors, particularly hospitality and retail, have experience and skills which are transferrable to social care work. They are also interested in offering work to students whose courses have perhaps been suspended until the Autumn.

Andy Mayhew, CEO of Praxis Care, explained: “Many people who work in other sectors, such as hospitality and retail are used to interacting directly with people and are comfortable with flexible work patterns. Nobody can fail to have been moved by the sudden loss of jobs in the bar, restaurant and hotels sector and we see an opportunity to at least help some of them re-enter employment. They, in turn will be making an invaluable contribution to maintain the services hundreds of people rely on every day.

“We recognise that some people ,for instance students, may only be looking for temporary work, but for all we will provide the support and guidance they need to do a very worthwhile job well.”

Praxis Care operates a range of accommodation and support services, including residential care homes, supported housing clusters and more dispersed intensively supported housing across Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man and England. They are offering opportunities at support worker and team leader level in each of these regions.

“This is an opportunity for workers from other sectors to get back into work quickly and support some of the most vulnerable in our communities. We would hope that, for some, it could turn out to be a change which they will love and find fulfilling in the long term,” added Mr Mayhew.
