Stepping back into classroom helps tourism and hospitality’s rising stars MAP their future

Two of Hastings Hotels’ rising stars have been benefiting from the group’s Management Ambassador Programme (MAP).
The programme, created in conjunction with Ulster University, looks to support continuous professional development within the tourism and hospitality sector. It aims to deepen participants' understanding of customer service and staff team management within the tourism and hospitality environment.
Recent graduates from the programme include Michael Shaw and Maria Ferris, who have seen their careers flourish through the programme.
Michael began his career in tourism & hospitality as a food and beverage assistant. Having completed the course, he is now the Assistant F&B manager at the Stormont Hotel.

“I had worked in tourism and hospitality in different sectors, but never in a hotel. It felt like it was a good challenge to go for, and so far it's been really paying off,” he said.
For Maria, who has gone from being a front office assistant to being deputy front office manager since completing the course, working in tourism and hospitality was a passion she had always wanted to explore.
“When I was a lot younger, I had wanted to be an air steward,” she said. “Later I did my NVQ in travel and tourism. It's something that I've always had an interest in.
“Every day is different. You don't know what you're coming into. I love the challenge; the best thing about the job is also the most challenging part of it as well.”
The MAP proved to be a challenge for both Maria and Michael, neither of whom had visions of setting foot inside a classroom after leaving school.
But the experience has proven to be one that neither of them will forget.
“We had our two-day induction and to be honest, I felt like it wasn't for me - I wanted to be out with the guests,” said Michael.
“But then I decided to stick it out as it is a six-month programme and not many people get selected that for it. I was so glad I did because what I’ve learned in that programme was so invaluable. It was a real treat to be part of it.”
Maria added: “It gave me more confidence in my ability to do my job well and to be a better manager in dealing with conflict situations.
“The course gave me the chance to meet new people and the social side of going to university was fun.”
Having followed their dreams into the world of tourism & hospitality, both Michael and Maria are encouraging others to do the same.
Michael advised: “You need to be able to think on your feet and retain information quite quickly. If you can attain those things and put them into practice then a career in tourism and hospitality can be very rewarding.
“The support you can receive from your colleagues and mentors is crucial as well. The support network that I’ve got in this role and having the support from the Operational Manager and the General Manager has set me up for success.”
Maria added: “Give it a go - you have nothing to lose, so take the opportunity. It's hard work, but it pays off.
“Tourism is booming, and the energy is incredible. Every day we welcome visitors from across the globe, whether they’re here for world-class golf, unforgettable music events, or simply to soak up the beauty of our region. It’s a career full of excitement, opportunities and surprises. If you’re looking for a career that is rewarding and exciting I’d encourage anyone to give it a go – you won’t regret it!”
