Sustainable food system vital to growth of the industry: MP
Mr Simpson praised consumers and retailers for their efforts to support the industry and reduce food wastage.
Commenting Mr Simpson said: “The UK Government published ‘Food 2030’ a strategy that ensures consumers are informed and can choose healthy, sustainable food. Throughout the UK; demand is met by competitive, highly skilled and resilient farming, fishing and food businesses.

Hide Ad“It is important that these aspects are supported by first class research and development. We must ensure that through this strategy we see the continuing provision of the benefits and services a healthy natural environment provides, promote high standards of animal health and welfare, protect food safety and make a significant contribution to rural communities
“The UK has a low carbon food system which is efficient with resources – any waste should be reused, recycled or used for energy generation. Food wastage is costing home owners on average £470 a year, rising to £700 for families with children.
“In days of financial pressures, these are statistics that can be avoided for the betterment of both the industry and the home owners.
“The Food 2030 strategy sets out a very clear vision as to how we tackle these barriers; and I have this week called on the DEFRA Minister for a full update on how the strategy is progressing.

Hide Ad“In the coming weeks I intend to host a Westminster debate on food wastage. This will be an opportunity for MPs from all corners of the United Kingdom to share their opinions on both the Food 2030 strategy and how we can collectively approach the issue of food sustainability.”
He added: “A sustainable foods industry will develop consumer confidence. A confident industry will advance buying habits that will reap profitable benefits for the farmers.”
