After ‘11 wonderful years’, The Smugglers Table Restaurant in Killyleagh will serve its last meal shortly after Christmas, marking the end of a cherished chapter.
Set on the picturesque banks of the Dibney River, where it meets Strangford Lough, the Bridge Street restaurant became a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike, offering classic European dishes with a modern twist and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
However owners Julie and Roy took to social media to share their bittersweet decision to close the doors
“The time has come…,” they wrote. “Just over 11 years ago an opportunity arose and a new team moved in to run the restaurant at the Smugglers Table. “During those years we have met the most loyal customers and staff, and so many of you have become our friends.
“As most of you know, our lives changed with the arrival of our beautiful daughter two years ago and we now feel that as she grows and her needs change, the late nights no longer work alongside our family.
“The decision for us to step away from the Smugglers Table Restaurant has been a difficult one, we will miss seeing you all so very much, however we hope you can understand our reasons.
“We want to stay in Killyleagh, it's very much our home now, and we hope we can continue to see some of you around the town. “We aren't going to sit with our feet up, but as we move forward we will find something that works better for the parents of a little girl who needs us to read her bedtime stories.
“Sunday 28th December will be an emotional final day for us at the Smugglers and we hope to see some of you before then. If you have a voucher for the restaurant it will need to be used before that Sunday.
The announcement sparked an immediate wave of support from the local community, with many expressing sadness at the closure while also acknowledging the importance of family. “Absolutely gutted,” wrote one customer, while another reflected, “Family comes first,” as well-wishers sent their support to the couple for the next chapter of their lives.
The restaurant’s final day of service will be Sunday, December 28, and customers are reminded to use any remaining vouchers before then.
Julie and Roy concluded their heartfelt message with gratitude: “Thanks again for 11 wonderful years. We will never forget your loyalty, and the friendships made will last a lifetime.”
