'This is a critical moment': New technology allows SONI to integrate more renewables on the electricity system and accelerate race to net zero

New scheduling and dispatch technology enables energy storage and smarter wind management across the Single Electricity Market

SONI, the electricity Transmission System Operator for Northern Ireland, in partnership with EirGrid, the Single Electricity Market Operator (SEMO) regulators, and industry stakeholders, has launched new technology designed to help Northern Ireland use more renewable energy and accelerate the transition to a cleaner electricity system.

The improvements are part of SONI’s Scheduling and Dispatch Programme (SDP) and include two major upgrades: SDP-02, which focuses on Energy Storage Power Stations, and SDP-04, which enhances wind dispatch capabilities.

These changes strengthen grid control systems across the island, making it easier to schedule and integrate new technologies within the Single Electricity Market.

Under SDP-02, SONI can now store surplus renewable electricity produced during periods of high generation, such as windy or sunny conditions, and use it later when demand rises. Previously, large batteries mainly supported grid stability, but they can now also trade energy—charging when renewable power is abundant or prices are low, and discharging when demand is high — reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Fully integrated into the real-time electricity market, these Energy Storage Power Stations (ESPS) allow SONI’s control centre to balance supply and demand more efficiently.

SDP-04 upgrades SONI’s Wind Dispatch Tool, giving the control centre improved control over renewable generation and reducing “dispatch down,” a situation in which wind energy is wasted because supply exceeds demand. This upgrade allows more wind and solar power to be utilised on the grid, further increasing Northern Ireland’s share of clean energy.

“This is a critical moment in Northern Ireland’s journey to net zero,” said Coleraine’s Alan Campbell, chief executive of SONI.

“Renewable energy is less predictable, but this technology helps us use more wind and solar power and better match supply with demand.

“Northern Ireland has excellent renewable resources. By investing in cutting-edge technology, we can make the most of them – delivering benefits for bill payers, businesses, and the environment.

“The Scheduling and Dispatch Programme is the biggest update to Single Electricity Market rules and systems since 2018. It supports a more flexible, efficient, and low-carbon power system, while ensuring fair access for all market participants.

“With these changes, SONI is tackling wasted renewable energy and increasing the share of clean electricity used in Northern Ireland. It also gives our expert control room engineers the tools needed to manage an ever more complex power system.

“These improvements will also benefit the wider economy by creating new opportunities and making Northern Ireland more attractive to investors.”
