UFU receives update on Taskforce

Ulster Farmers' Union deputy president Ivor Ferguson and Chief Executive Wesley Aston have attended a COPA meeting in the Netherlands where the Chair of the EU Agricultural Markets Task Force, Cees P Veerman, a former Dutch Minister of Agriculture, gave a presentation on the progress made to date.

This taskforce made up of 11 further members from throughout Europe, including David Dobbin, was appointed by EU farm commissioner, Phil Hogan to examine the functioning of Europe’s agricultural markets with the view of improving the position of farmers within the food supply chain.

“Having Mr Dobbin on the Task Force gives us a real opportunity to feed in a number of local issues we feel need addressed within the supply chain to strengthen the position of farmers. We need to see some stability and profitability put back into all sectors within agriculture with issues such as market transparency, volatility and future financial instruments being addressed,” said Mr Ferguson.
