Uganda Adventure leads to launch of Tendo Systems

North Down and Uganda don’t have much in common, but after seven years volunteering as a hospital engineer, Paul Baker returned to Bangor with a business idea inspired by his time in the rural African country.

Launched in 2018, Tendo Systems specialises in Wireless Temperature Monitoring systems. Using cloud-based technology to monitor and report on environmental factors, these systems are ideal for use in storage and refrigeration across industries such as Food Manufacturing, Healthcare, Laboratories and Heritage.

Baker’s role in Kiwoko Hospital, Uganda, was to improve the hospital’s technical capacity, looking after medical electronics, computer equipment and the electricity supply.

This work involved considerable planning and creativity to make sure vital services continued through the soaring temperatures of the dry season and water shortages - problems Baker had never experienced in Northern Ireland. It became clear that preventative maintenance and calibration schedules needed to be established to drive success.

Baker reflected: “The Technical staff were incredibly talented and able. My aim was to help move from fire-fighting to proactive equipment servicing. I realised in Uganda that technology has the power to predict and avoid problems and that’s where the idea for Tendo Systems came along. Our monitoring systems help businesses save money and increase profits by predicting and avoiding problems before it is too late.

“Coping with power outages, lightning strikes and needing to improvise when spare parts were not available during my time in Uganda taught me to be creative when it comes to problem solving.”

Tendo Systems, named after the house Baker and his family lived in on the grounds of Kiwoko Hospital, have a growing list of clients who are using this technology to save time and money as well as improve compliance. It wasn’t just a business idea that Baker left Uganda with; the team he worked alongside left a lasting impact.

He added: “My Ugandan colleagues had a determination and dedication to their work that I’ve never seen before. We learned from each other and faced challenges together. This outlook still inspires and encourages me in my work.”

Tendo Systems hopes to continue to support the work of Kiwoko Hospital in the years ahead.
