Union issues rural crime reminder

Livestock crime has for many years proven an extremely difficult issue to find solutions to and it remains a major issue for farmers across the province.

Commenting UFU deputy president Barclay Bell said: “The unfortunate reality is that farmers and producers are having valuable livestock and machinery stolen on a regular basis and this is having a devastating impact on farm families and businesses.

“Over the past few years the PSNI have received an alarming numbers of reported livestock thefts, with sheep and cattle proving common targets for thieves. Livestock theft can have a devastating impact on a farmer’s livelihood and can leave a lasting impact on the farm families who fall victim.”

While the UFU acknowledges there is no quick fix to livestock theft, Mr Bell added: “The UFU will continue to work with stakeholders to come up with effective methods of crime prevention. I would urge farmers to be proactive in tackling crime. If you see suspicious behaviour or suspicious vehicles, please contact the PSNI as soon as possible on 101 or Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.”
