Very strong trade for sheep at Markethill Mart

An entry of 1,820 sheep at Markethill on Wednesday 29th March continued to sell in a very strong trade with returns for fat hoggets and cull ewes improved on the week.

1,100 hoggets had a complete clearance with heavy hoggets selling steadily from £88 to £93 each with the 700 heavy hoggets sold averaging 27 kilos at £90.70 each.

Top price of 372p per kilo was paid for 31 hoggets weighing 25 kilos at £93 each for Middletown farmer.

All good quality heavy hoggets sold 340p to 368p per kilo.

Middleweight hoggets sold from 350 to a top of 385p per kilo for 30 hoggets weighing 21.3 kilos at £82 for a Newtownhamilton farmer.

A small number of store hoggets sold from 360p to a top of 405p per kilo for 29 hoggets weighing 16.9 kilos at £68.50 for Gortin.

A small number of spring lambs sold to a top of £125 at 521p per kilo for 24 kilos from a Markethill farmer. A Newtownhamilton farmer sold 20 spring lambs weighing 23.5 kilos at £106 each.

220 cull ewes sold in the best trade so far this year to a top of £134 with all heavy ewes selling from £100 to £125 each.

Second quality ewes sold from £60 to £90 each.

The largest entry of ewes and lambs to date this year continued to sell in a strong trade.

Good quality doubles sold to £242 each with main demand from £190 to £235 each.

Good quality singles reached £180 with the main demand from £150 to £172 each.
