White magic at Springhill

Despite the wet and windy weather of late, early signs of spring are appearing at Springhill in Moneymore.

The annual snowdrops are looking better than ever and they bring with them a breath of fresh air and a sign that spring is on its way.

Lovingly planted and cared for over the years by the gardening team, Springhill’s snowdrop display rivals some of the best in the country and it has to be seen to be believed.

Springhill will be open every weekend throughout February from 12-5pm, so visitors have ample time to get up close and personal with these beautiful little flowers.

The small, white, bell-shaped flowers are always a welcome sight as winter draws to a close. Snowdrop, also known as Galanthus nivalis, is a brave little flower and the colder the weather, the longer they will last, with some flowering into March. Springhill is delighted to welcome special guest Mark Smyth who will be hosting a series of talks on 7, 21 and 28 February. “Snowdrops - what’s the fuss?” will explain the wonderful world of snowdrops. Did you know there are 19 species of snowdrop and over 2,000 named varieties? They are named after people ‘Ailwyn’, places ‘Pusey Green Tip’, colour ‘Wendy’s Gold’, pets ‘Tilly’, size of flower ‘Big Boy’ or ‘Mini Me’ and the list goes on. Talks start at 2pm and pre-booking is essential. Call 028 8674 8210.

Take in all that Springhill has to offer with a crisp winter walk along the Beech, Sawpit Hill and Woodland trails. Enjoy a hot drink in the Servants’ Hall Tea Room or grab a coffee on the go from the Visitor Centre. The children will love the natural play area – make a mud pie, swing on a rope and say hello to the resident dragon, Emoss.

Don’t miss the opportunity to pick up a few second-hand books from the Well-Read Bookshop and have a browse around the shop, stocking everything from scarves and hats to cups and candles and other items for the home and garden. And just for those who want to create some white magic of their own, snowdrops plants will be available to buy.
