IKEA Belfast has supported Rascals Community Playgroup, a vital preschool in the local community, by creating high-quality, engaging spaces designed to inspire children to play, learn, and build connections with their friends.

IKEA Belfast has given a new lease of life to Rascals Community Playgroup in Gortin, Co Tyrone, by redesigning and redecorating its facilities.

The playgroup, which had been relying on outdated and damaged donated furniture and equipment, needed a refresh to better serve its role as a community cornerstone for early education.

Answering the call, IKEA Belfast’s Interior Design Team partnered with Rascals’ staff and committee to transform the space, introducing organised layouts, new furniture, and play equipment aimed at enriching early education. The project involved planning, furniture assembly, painting, and reorganising, all of which reflect IKEA Belfast’s dedication to supporting the local community.

The redesign introduced defined play zones, including imaginative role-play areas and quiet reading corners, designed to encourage both social interaction and independent learning. As part of the project, innovative upcycling efforts such as converting an indoor play kitchen into an outdoor mud kitchen demonstrated IKEA’s commitment to sustainability. Additionally, staff and volunteers enhanced the space by decluttering and improving storage, creating a more functional, organised, and welcoming environment for the children.

IKEA also supported the creation of a shopping and wish list to aid future fundraising efforts, aligning with the playgroup's plans to expand its capacity for both children and staff.

This effort coincides with Rascals Community Playgroup’s open day on Tuesday, 2nd December, providing families an opportunity to meet the staff, explore the newly transformed space, and learn more about enrolling their little ones for the upcoming year.

Louise Jackson, IKEA Belfast, said: “We’re delighted to have brought new life to Rascals Community Playgroup by sharing our design and planning expertise.
