The main exam board for Northern Ireland has tonight announced that all new coursework for A-Level, A/S Level and GCSEs should be put into abeyance.

CCEA, which handles over 90% of all exams in Northern Ireland made the announcement as schools struggle to keep learning on track amid the coronavirus crisis.

They have said that all oral exams have been cancelled.

However written exams for A-Level, A/S Level and GCSE (which take place generally in May and June) may yet go ahead.

CCEA advised keeping any coursework which has already been done; its announcement only applies to new coursework.

It comes after the education minister Peter Weir closed all schools on March 20 (with the exception of some provision for the children of key workers).

The CCEA statement said “we recognise that it is not possible for centres to fulfil the requirements for coursework and controlled assessment (internal assessment) for CCEA qualification”.

It added: “CCEA are finalising options for the awarding of grades for GCSE and GCE qualifications and will shortly be advising the Department of Education on this. As part of our deliberations, we are considering a broad range of data and information that may be used.

“Until our grading work is finalised and considered by the Department of Education, we are asking that examination centres retain coursework so that it may be available for future consideration and reference. Oral examinations cannot take place.

“Learners should still be working towards completing their programme of study and we will provide further updates as soon as possible.”
