He posted a picture of the bandaged wound on Twitter with the message: “Heading into theatre for a wee bit more surgery after accidentally chopping the top of my finger! And just when the golf courses are opening soon Crying face #ouch”

Following the surgery, he explained to the News Letter on Monday what had happened: “I had a small accident at home, catching my finger in the door and chopped the top of my finger off.

“I must thank the brilliant staff at the Ulster Hospital for fixing me up, especially during such a busy time for them.

“Also thanks to all the people who have wished me well, and, the ones who haven’t missed the opportunity to poke a bit of fun at me.

“It’s all good, I’m on the mend and getting ready to host a weekend of special North West 200 coverage this weekend.”

Stephen will be broadcasting live on the BBC Sports website and Facebook page from 10am to 2pm on Saturday, then live on BBC Radio Ulster from 2pm to 5pm. Our Sport Re-run programme will air on Sunday night at 8.15pm on BBC Two Northern Ireland.

The coverage features action from previous NW200s and special guest appearances, with the race having been cancelled this year due to coronavirus.
