Eight deaths recorded in single NI council area in 24 hours

One of Northern Ireland’s 11 local government districts has recorded eight additional Covid-19 related deaths in the last 24 hours.

Thirteen additional deaths were recorded by the Department of Health (DoH) in Northern Ireland in the 24 hours to 10.00am on Thursday morning.

The DoH defines a Covid related death as one that occurs within 28 days of testing positive for coronavirus.

Of the 13 additional deaths, eight of them were recorded in the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon council area.

Seven of the 13 deaths were male and six were female.

One patient aged between 40-59 died; five were aged between 60-79 and seven were aged 80 or older.

The 13 deaths occurred in the following council areas: Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon (eight); Antrim and Newtownabbey (one); Mid Ulster (one); Derry City and Strabane (one); Causeway Coast and Glens (one) and Ards (one).

It means the total number of Covid related deaths in Northern Ireland since the beginning of the pandemic is now 1,792.

The DoH also recorded an additional 592 new infections taking the figure for the last seven days and for the pandemic as a whole to 4,066 and 102,410 respectively.

There are 768 inpatients with Covid-19 in hospitals across Northern Ireland - 158 inpatients fewer than this time last week.

There is a total of 160 intensive care unit (ICU) beds in Northern Ireland - 67 are occupied by patients with Covid-19; 55 by patients with other conditions leaving 38 unoccupied.

Northern Ireland’s hospital bed capacity is currently at 92 per cent.
