NI Coronavirus death toll now 70 after seven more deaths in last 24 hours

Seven more people have died after testing positive for COVID-19 in Northern Ireland, the deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill has confirmed.

The latest set of statistics means the total number of people to have died in Northern Ireland now stands at 70.

Mrs. O'Neill revealed the news of the seven deaths at Monday's daily Coronavirus press briefing.

An additional 69 confirmed cases have also been identified, taking the total number of infections to 1,089.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Boris Johnson remains in hospital in London where he is being treated for persistent COVID-19 symptoms.

Mr. Johnson was admitted to a NHS hospital in London on Sunday evening.

A spokesperson for 10 Downing Street said the decision to admit Mr. Johnson to hospital a precautionary one.

"Last night, on the advice of my doctor, I went into hospital for some routine tests as I’m still experiencing coronavirus symptoms," wrote Mr. Johnson.

"I’m in good spirits and keeping in touch with my team, as we work together to fight this virus and keep everyone safe.

"I’d like to say thank you to all the brilliant NHS staff taking care of me and others in this difficult time.

"You are the best of Britain.

"Stay safe everyone, and please remember to stay at home to protect the NHS and save lives," he added.
