NI Coronavirus death toll up to 140 - Positive COVID-19 cases now more than 2,000 - European countries begin to come out of lockdown

The number of people to die in Northern Ireland hospitals after testing positive for COVID-19 has increased by six to 140 in the last 24 hours, the Public Health Agency (PHA) has said.

Wednesday's daily surveillance report also revealed that an additional 121 people had tested positive for the disease since Tuesday.

More than 2,000 people (2,088) have now tested positive for COVID-19 in Northern Ireland.

A total number of 13,672 people have been tested for the virus in Northern Ireland so far.

England, Scotland and Wales recorded an additional 651, 84 and 60 COVID-19 related hospital deaths in the last 24 hours taking the total for the United Kingdom to 801.

The figures released by the four different authorities in the four parts of the UK reflects the number of hospital deaths and do not include the number of people to die after testing positive for COVID-19 in social care facilities such as homes for older people.

The total number of COVID-19 related deaths in the Republic of Ireland is 406 (correct at the time of publishing).

The latest set of statistics comes as some European countries begin to relax lockdown measures.

Denmark is allowing some young children to return to school while some shops have reopened in Italy and Austria.
