A superfood is a nutrient-dense ingredient that is rich in compounds considered beneficial to a person's health. Contrary to popular belief, investing in these ingredients doesn’t always have to be expensive. People might be surprised to find out that some superfoods can already be found in their kitchen.

Here, Food Expert Matthew McDermid from The Bury Black Pudding Company, reveals four everyday superfoods, and where you can find them.

Black pudding

Barley is one of the best grains for your health, providing blood glucose stabilisation, cardiovascular protection, and cancer prevention. This ancient grain serves as more than just a bulky filler. It contains a higher amount of dietary fibre than any other grain, plus it may also promote gut health, so it really is going the extra mile to boost your health. Most people mistake the flecks of white in black pudding for fat, and while a small few are, in reality, most are actually grains of barley. So, next time you reach for the blackpudding you could be doing more good for your body than you think.

Eggs

Eggs are more than just a breakfast favourite; they’re one of the most nutrient-dense foods you can eat. They provide high-quality protein, essential amino acids, and antioxidants, which support eye health. Their versatility also makes them perfect for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, giving your diet a reliable nutritional boost.

Oats

A staple in many kitchens, oats are also a superfood. They are rich in soluble fibre, particularly beta-glucan, which helps lower cholesterol, stabilise blood sugar levels, and support heart health. Oats are also packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, making them a versatile superfood that can be enjoyed at breakfast, in baking, or in savoury dishes like meatloaf, bread, or as a crust on chicken or fish.

Garlic

Often overlooked, garlic actually has lots of health benefits as it contains anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties. Regular consumption of garlic has also been linked to improved heart health and better circulation, making it an easy addition to everyday meals.
