He was taken to hospital with several wounds and two skull fractures.

The attackers - who all wore balaclavas and were carrying knives or machetes - fled the scene, police said.

Detective Constable Jo Lockett of Greater Manchester Police said: "It is appalling that a man was attacked and left in hospital at the hands of these men.

"I want to assure people that we are treating this as an isolated incident and don't believe there to be any wider threat to the community."

He appealed for any witnesses to the attack, which took place at around 11.45pm on Sunday in Lyme Grove, to come forward.

The victim managed to escape and ran into a property where he raised the alarm, while the offenders fled in the direction of Beech Avenue.
