Short film explores the history of Belfast’s Holyland

In recent times, the Holyland area of south Belfast has made the headlines for all the wrong reasons, associated with late night partying from some of the student population and St Patrick’s Day parties, but a new film, aims to show the fascinating history of the area.

Belfast’s Holyland: A History Reclaimed is a 30 minute film produced by Forward South Partnership in association with local residents and filmed and directed by Connor McKernan.

Historian Dr Eamon Phoenix takes us on a fascinating tour of five locations in the area and talks with local residents who highlight its history of diversity and inclusion.

The film explores the history of Botanic Primary School, Botanic Primary School, and looks at the architecture of buildings in the area.

The Horsey Hill, which looks out onto the Lagan, is featured as a forgotten landmark that residents plan to restore.

The film also pays tribute to residents’ efforts in transforming a rundown alley into a green, flower-filled space called Wildflower Alley - an initiative which has sparked more regenerated entries to spring up all over the city.

Helen Crickard, chairperson of the Forward South Partnership Board of Directors said:“Produced through co-design, this film captures the beauty of the Holyland area.

“When you learn about its history, you gain a greater understanding and appreciation of this unique area and the potential for regeneration that residents, through the Holyland Trust, are leading in collaboration with Forward South Partnership.”
