A big Royal event but it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea

A headline caught my eye recently, `Charles hasn’t inherited people’s deference for the late queen’ a thought which made me sit up and take notice.

Can it be that we are slowly edging towards this very historic moment in our history - the crowning of a new King - with a proportion of the population not caring one way or another now that the much loved Queen has gone?

Is this just something created by the media to stir things up a bit since the big Crowning moment is still a while away or is it on the fantasy list of the new SNP leader Humza Yousaf whose predecessor Nicola Sturgeon gave the impression of being no great fan of Royalty though she attended a number of major Royal events during her time in office.

Recently Yousaf suggested that Scots could replace the monarchy within five years of achieving independence and Daily Telegraph polls suggest that young people north of the border agree with him.

Have to say I spend a holiday in Scotland every year and haven’t heard anyone wishing to see the Monarchy toppled. Some criticism yes, but the Scots are great traditionalists and I think the Royals are well bedded in there – for now.

The late Queen adored her Scottish summer home and spent quite a lot of time there. Her son, King Charles enjoys the privacy he seeks in Scotland though Queen Camilla might not take to the itchy heather, walks in the lashing rain and the increasing lack of privacy as tourists go there in their droves winter and summer.

I can’t see that the Monarchy would be in any danger from Scottish republicans in the short or even longer term but deference is everything to Royalty and it has to be earned, even nurtured. Without it they would struggle so those seasonal Royal visits to Scotland will be vital.

It will also be important to encourage William and Kate with their family to make a home in one of those deserted Scottish castles, just to keep the tradition going. It really is hard work being a Royal even with a clatter of servants in their wake. Kingship has to be earned and Prince William will have some catching up to do.

The work in winning over Scotland to a new Monarchy has to begin sooner rather than later. The Prince Harry episodes and Megan’s preference for her home country will not help his father settle in to winning over the Scots. But Harry is well down the list of inheritors of the British crown so he may not worry too much. But then there’s the Republican element, like the regular roosting pigeons at the Palace waiting to see what happens as a new King settles in.

President Joe Biden it is believed will not attend the Royals’ big event on May 6 as no other US President has ever attended a British Coronation. His staff believe he is `too old to travel twice across the Atlantic in the space of a few weeks’. The President is 80 years old and it is believed that he took a long rest after making the State of the Union Address. His wife though will attend the Coronation.
