VIDEO: Discover Northern Ireland’s great bakes with Great British Bake Off's Coleraine star Iain Ross

He created an edible Giant’s Causeway and now Coleraine Great British Bake Off star Iain Ross is discovering that Northern Ireland is home to a ‘giant’ array of great bakes!

Iain, who took inspiration from the vistas of Downhill Beach, Glenariff Forest Park and the Giant’s Causeway for some of his showstoppers on the show, recently worked with Discover Northern Ireland to promote the Causeway Coast.

He enjoyed a stay at The Bushmills Inn and sampled some baked goods at Ursa Minor Bakehouse in Ballycastle.

The Coleraine man has once again teamed up with Discover Northern Ireland, this time to explore our deep love for baking.

From the perfect soda bread to the sweetest of fifteens, this part of the world is home to many unique recipes that have delighted generations of tastes buds.

“It’s been a whirlwind year for me, I started baking while studying for my degree and have been experimenting with everything pickled, aged and cultured ever since.

“There’s no doubt Northern Ireland is home to some incredible recipes and locations which have inspired my bakes. I’m sure we all have a few that have been passed down through our families, and I can’t wait to discover some more.

“When Discover Northern Ireland invited Dervla and I to take this giant taste adventure, we were eager to really embrace the local baking and food scene.

“It was a short but beautiful dive from our home to Ballydorn Stay and honestly, it would be worth taking the trip for this place alone.

“The views are amazing, the king bed is incredibly cozy and the private firepit area is so relaxing – plus it was great fun to roast marshmallows over, even if I did end up setting a few alight!”

The following day, Iain and Dervla made their way to Tracey’s Farmhouse Kitchen to try their hand at traditional Irish breadmaking.

He said: “We had a brainstorm at the start of the session and decided to make a soda bread pizza and it turned out genuinely unreal!

"It was incredible spending time with Tracey in such a beautiful location and cooking on the griddle was such a wonderful experience that I’ll cherish forever.”

“Dervla loved it too, it really is an experience suitable for all levels of culinary expertise, I’d really encourage everyone to come visit Tracey and bake bread with her.

“If nothing else, you’ll leave with lots of soda and wheaten bread, which is never a bad thing.

“Baking has become incredibly popular once again, with shows like Bake Off really bringing it to the fore.

“In Northern Ireland we have so many baked goods which are unique to here and it is great that we are celebrating them with giant experiences for visitors. Combining our great food with the stunning beauty of this part of the world is a real recipe for success.

“Telling our stories through food is a wonderful thing and as I discovered on my trip, it’s great fun too.”
