'˜Absolute gentleman' dies after north Antrim collision

Tributes have been paid to 'an absolute gentleman' who died after a two vehicle collision in north Antrim.

Olaf McCaw, from Dervock, died after the collision outside Ballymoney early this morning.

UUP Councillor Darryl Wilson - whose wife is related to Mr McCaw - said: “I was deeply saddened to learn this morning that Olaf McCaw had passed away as a result of a road traffic collision.

“Olaf was an absolute gentleman, he always took the time to stop for a chat with friends, a very well known character from Dervock renowned for reciting poetry and yarns.

“Olaf was well known and loved by many from Dervock and the Ballymoney area.

“They certainly broke the mould when they made Olaf, the town will be a little less colourful now that he is gone.”

Councillor Wilson added: “Thoughts and prayers go out to Olafs partner, children and entire family circle at this very sad time.”

A PSNI spokesman said: “It is believed that this road traffic collision occurred shortly before 7.30am this morning.

“I would appeal to anyone who was travelling on the Garryduff Road around this time and who may have witnessed this incident, or anyone who has any information about it, to contact Police on the non-emergency number 101.”

A spokeswoman for the Northern Trust said a second person who had been brought to them after the Ballymoney collision had been released from hospital.

And DUP Councillor John Finlay, told of his sadness after the fatal crash at Garryduff Road, Ballymoney.

“I was shocked and saddened to learn that a man has died as a result of a road accident on Garryduff Road, Ballymoney this morning, and I just want to extend my sympathy to the victim’s family and friends at this very difficult time,” he said. “Although details are yet unclear, I understand that two vehicles were involved, and my thoughts are also with any others who were caught up in the crash. Meanwhile, I appeal to everyone to exercise great care on our roads”.
