Almost 50 firefighters battling major fire which began days ago in south Armagh

The NI Fire and Rescue Service is currently trying to control what it calls “a significant wildfire” close to the Irish border.

It is based in the Carrickbroad Road, area of Killeavy, just to the south-west of Newry.

The fire brigade said the incident “has been ongoing now for several days”, and involves “a large area of gorse and forestry”.

It is just one of a string of wildfires this week, such as a large twin blaze in north Antrim, near Ballycastle.

In a statement it said: “There are currently six appliances, a water tanker, command unit and supervisory officers at the scene.

“There are a total of 46 personnel including a specialist wildfire team committed to the incident at present.

“Dealing with incidents of this nature, which at this stage appears to have been started deliberately unnecessarily draws precious resources away from where they are needed most, protecting our community.

“It is most important that we all play our part in protecting our communities during this national emergency, and to ensure that we do not add unnecessary pressures to the emergency services. NIFRS would therefore appeal to those involved in setting these fires to desist immediately.

“The public are also reminded that deliberate setting of wildfires is a criminal offence and if you see anyone setting a fire you should call the PSNI immediately.”
