Arrests after attempted burglary and arson at GAA club

Shortly before 5.40am today police received a report of a fire at the Co Armagh club.

Police and Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service attended and it was established that the fire had been started deliberately and that damage had been caused to the roof and wall of the property.

A PSNI spokesman said a short time later two men - aged 21-years and 22-years - were arrested in the Victoria Place area of the town on suspicion of attempted burglary and arson.

“They are both in custody assisting police with their inquiries,” he added.

Chief Inspector Davy Beck is appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone with any information relating to the incident to contact Detectives in Lurgan Police Station on 101. Information can also be passed anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Sinn Féin councillor Catherine Seeley said the entire community is sickened after the attack at Phoenix Boxing Club in Lurgan.

“People are absolute sickened after hearing the news of the arson attack on the Phoenix Boxing Club,” she said.

“It is a relief no one was injured but it is a huge blow to those who volunteer their time every evening of the week to provide a facility for the community.

“It is also a blow for those young people training for competitions and for personal fitness in the club.

“The club is due to have some improvement work done over the next number of weeks and I will now be contacting the funders to ensure this project has not been jeopardised.”
